In a landmark initiative to foster leadership among young girls and boys with disabilities, the Association
of Women with Disabilities recently conducted a three-day leadership training program from March 4th
to March 6th, 2024. The event, held at the picturesque Nice Place Resort in Sigiriya, marked a significant
step forward in promoting inclusivity and empowerment within the disabled community.
The program catered to both young girls and boys with disabilities, along with members of their parents’
association, recognizing the pivotal role of family support in nurturing leadership skills. Two officers
representing The Asia Foundation also participated in this program.
Throughout the program, participants engaged in interactive workshops, discussions, and skill-building
exercises tailored to enhance their leadership potential. Topics ranged from effective communication and
advocacy to project management and self-empowerment strategies. Practical sessions were
complemented by inspiring talks from accomplished individuals within the disability rights movement,
offering role models and insights into overcoming challenges.
, The project manager of the Association of Women with Disabilities Mr. Chaminda Premathilake,
expressed his satisfaction with the program’s outcomes, stating, “Empowering our youth with disabilities
